CMS Approves a Renewal of the “Building and Transforming Coverage, Services, and Supports for a Healthier Virginia” Section 1115 Demonstration Medicaid.gov sent this bulletin at 07/31/2026 12:47 PM EDT View in browser | Distributed by Center for Medicaid and CHIP Services (CMCS) July 31, 2026 The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved a renewal of the “Building and Transforming Coverage, Services, and Supports for a Healthier Virginia (BTCSSHV)” section 1115 demonstration. In addition, Virginia now has the authority to receive FFP for providing eligible individuals with a serious mental illness, Medicaid services in an IMD.

Press Release: CMS Takes Bold New Approach to Stewarding Medicaid Demonstration Project Spending
Beginning January 1, 2027, CMS will not approve new demonstrations, demonstration renewals, or demonstration amendments unless the CMS Chief Actuary certifies that the demonstration project is not expected to increase federal spending compared to the state’s Medicaid program without the demonstration.

CMS Approves Family Planning Section 1115 Demonstration Amendments and Extensions
Today, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) approved amendments to five family planning section 1115 demonstrations to identify sexually transmitted infection (STI)/sexually transmitted disease (STD) screening as a family planning service and, for four demonstrations, STI/STD diagnosis services as a family planning-related service to conform with State Medicaid Director Letters #10-013 , #14-003 , and #16-008 .
